Students with an interest in Africa are encouraged to explore the numerous programs available for studying abroad in an African country. Anyone interested in studying abroad should contact the University's Study Abroad Office, which is located in the International Studies Building. In the Study Abroad Resource Room there are reference guides to study abroad programs which students can use to identify programs that may serve their needs and interests. Also, the office assists students in making the necessary arrangements for studying abroad, such as arranging for academic credit.
The University of Illinois has an exchange with the University of Cape Town in South Africa and with the American University in Cairo . Other programs that facilitate study in African universities are run by various consortia such as the Council on International Education Exchange . The University of Illinois Study Abroad Office has a formal agreement with other U.S. universities' programs in Africa, including the University of Minnesota programs in Ghana, Senegal and Kenya.
There are many options for studying in Africa and students can explore their options with their professors and with advisors in the Study Abroad Office. In addition, various colleges within the University of Illinois, such as Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering , Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences , Fine and Applied Arts , and Veterinary Medicine , have offered programs to Africa in the recent years. Through these college programs students have traveled to Egypt, Ghana, Benin, South Africa and Kenya, among other countries on the continent.

STUDY ABROAD AND SERVICE LEARNING IN MOROCCO, SPRING 2010
ISLAM, ENGLISH, AND THE WEST
CI 499 SAM
Mark Dressman, Ph.D. Instructor
This short-term study abroad course focuses on the religious and language politics of Morocco, through the perspectives of university and secondary school teachers and students.
The course will be transcultural in that most learning will take place through direct dialogue and interaction with Moroccan teachers and students. We'll spend eight weeks before the trip learning about Moroccan history and language policy, Moroccan Arabic, and the basics of teaching English as a foreign language. The trip is for 15 days, from the end of the spring semester to early June. We'll spend three days in Rabat at a Moroccan university in seminars with Moroccan English students, travel to Marrakech, then through the Middle Atlas to the Berber town of Azrou, where we'll spend three more days at Lycée Tarik, an historic high school, teaching English. From there we travel to Fes, the cultural capital of Morocco, then Casablanca, and overnight in Madrid, Spain, on the return trip. Some photos are available.
